Assistant Director of Liberty Education

Description

Overview:

Position Title: Assistant Director of Liberty Education

Department: Content & Interpretation

Reports to: Senior Director of Content & Interpretation

About Us

At the National Liberty Museum, America’s foundational value is both celebrated and explored through thought-provoking exhibitions, programs, and educational initiatives. While rooted in Old City Philadelphia, we connect the nation’s founding principles to the present. We do not promote political agendas or advocate for one side over another. Instead, we create space for people to engage directly with the ideas, tensions, and responsibilities that come with a free society.

Position Summary

Are you interested in shaping dynamic educational experiences that bring civic ideas to life? The National Liberty Museum is seeking an Assistant Director of Liberty Education to lead the design and execution of our educational programming. Liberty Education is the National Liberty Museum’s distinctive model for learning - rooted in our exhibitions and grounded in the belief that liberty must be practiced, not just studied. It uses the ideas and tensions explored in our galleries as a catalyst for participation, moving beyond passive civics to engage learners in questioning, dialogue, and action.

This is a senior, hands-on role for someone with experience managing and growing museum or informal education programs. You will oversee a portfolio of public-facing experiences, including adult programs, a nascent NEH-funded podcast, and a growing tour program, as well as youth initiatives such as Young Heroes Awards, and LEAP (Learning & Engagement Across Perspectives), our flagship program for students in grades 4–8. You will also oversee our long-running Young Heroes Awards, a long-running program

You should be comfortable owning programs end-to-end - developing models, managing partnerships, overseeing budgets and logistics, and ensuring strong delivery. You will be comfortable including a diversity of perspectives and talking to people you may not agree with. For this role, strong leadership, an entrepreneurial mindset, and disciplined organization are essential.

Candidates whose experience is primarily classroom-based, without direct responsibility for program development and management in a museum or similar setting, are unlikely to be a fit.
