Individual Giving Officer

Description

The New Children’s Museum seeks an experienced development professional with superb interpersonal, organizational and prospect development skills to support the objectives of the Development Department. Candidate must have non-profit fundraising experience that involves extensive work with individual donors and a track record of growing donations in both number and size.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree required
• Certificate in Fundraising and/or advanced degree preferred
• Minimum seven years’ experience in the development field required
• Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, characterized by the ability to listen, to speak, and to write well, with a strong commitment to customer service and the ability to inspire and engage
• Must be detail-oriented, highly organized and demonstrate proficiency in creating thoughtful donor correspondence, conducting research and managing database requirements
• Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel Spreadsheets and Outlook + Calendar
• Strong background in working with boards, volunteers and donors
• Experience soliciting and closing five- and six-figure major gifts
• Planned giving experience preferred
• Capital and/or endowment campaign experience preferred
• Experience developing and monitoring budgets preferred
• A desire to discover and understand all facets of the organization, its programming and its role in the greater San Diego community
• Knowledge of the San Diego philanthropic community preferred
• Experience managing interdepartmental, multi-faceted projects required
• A self-directed, entrepreneurial spirit
• Team player able to work collaboratively with development colleagues as well as interface effectively with other departments
• Experience using Altru or equivalent CRM database highly desired
• Available to occasionally work weekends and evenings, as needed

Essential duties include:
• Oversee The Museum’s $800,000+ annual Individual Giving Campaign, including annual fund gifts at all levels, donations toward large-scale exhibitions and multi-year commitments
• Steward a growing portfolio of 75+ donors
• Take responsibility for the cultivation, solicitation, gift closure and stewardship of prospective donors and donors in portfolio
• Utilize the “breakfast, lunch and coffee” approach to build relationships to maximize giving, knowing that the most valuable time spent is either in person or on the phone with these important contacts
• Schedule a minimum of four donor meetings/visits per week (two with a potential donor and two to steward current donors)
• With the support of the Development CRM Specialist, create a plan for and carry out a minimum of four appeals annually, utilizing direct mail, email, social media, on-site signage, etc. to raise critical annual funds
• Strategically include Board members and staff members from other departments in site visits/meetings with donors
• Assist the Vice President, Development with Board member stewardship
• Work with the Vice President, Development to steward major gift donors and prospects
• Play an instrumental role in the annual benefit event and other donor-related events throughout the year, including: planning, securing underwriting and ticket sales, mingling with donors during events and following up
• Conceive of, develop, and write fundraising proposals and in so doing collaborate with the Senior Grant Writer, Development team, Education + Exhibitions team and the Marketing & Communications team
• Ensure all individual donor benefits are fulfilled throughout the year
• Maintain an active list of individual major gift prospects and create/pursue a plan to cultivate them
• Consistently utilize Altru database to track Individual Giving moves management
• Develop fundraising strategies that correlate with Museum exhibitions and programs and align with donor philanthropic objectives
• Identify potential Board members to put before the Nominating Committee
• Regularly attend external events that provide the opportunity to network with current and prospective donors
• Play an active role in bi-monthly Development Committee meetings
• In collaboration with the Vice President, Development, design, manage and implement an annual Planned Giving plan, including committee formation, identification of professional legal expertise, prospect and member engagement activities and education/professional development
• Maintain physical and electronic records for the Individual Giving Campaign
• Other duties as requested by the Vice President, Development
