Please Touch Museum (the Children’s Museum of Philadelphia) a non-profit organization seeks an experienced, energetic, and dynamic Senior Director, Museum Experience & Education (Director) to provide the leadership, direction, management and coordination of the Museum’s educational efforts to support the organization’s mission and the goals in its innovative new strategic plan.
Senior Director of Museum Experience and Education (Director) is responsible for developing the strategy and implementing the plan for Please Touch Museum’s mission aligned informal learning experiences and programs. Reporting directly to the President and CEO, the Director, will oversee an integrated Museum Education and Guest Experience department. The Director will work closely with the Chief Engagement Officer in developing learning experiences and programs which connect to the strategy for all exhibits. The Director will be responsible for overseeing the evaluation of all learning experiences and programs and support the Chief Engagement Officer on the overall research agenda for the Museum. The Director will work closely with the Chief Development Officer to provide background and other relevant information related to grant proposals and reports and participate in determining the contributed revenue plan for the Museum as related to Museum Experience and Education initiatives.
The individual will work to support the Museum’s goal to be a leading 21st century children’s museum providing the highest quality in a museum setting related to educational programming and guest experiences. The Director will demonstrate an appreciation of the interface of content rich learning through play experiences as part of the guest experience that all museum visitors to PTM expect and deserve. They are expected to have demonstrated a commitment to outcomes measures and a willingness to support PTM’s strategic imperative to participate in evaluation and research.
The Director will provide dynamic leadership, strategy development and operational management including evaluation of programs.
As a member of the Executive Team of Please Touch Museum, the Senior Director Museum Experience and Education contributes to the overall direction of the Museum and is responsible for planning, directing, and advancing the Museum’s strategic plan and aligning department goals and initiatives with the strategy, mission, vision and values of the organization.
Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree required, with an emphasis on Education, Communications, Museum Communications or related fields preferred; five plus years as an experienced leader who has been a member of an executive management team, demonstrating excellent accountability, leadership, communication, mentoring, empowerment and resource management skills; proven ability to build and lead successful teams and has a collaborative leadership style; understanding of museum industry, overall competition and market place; well-developed interpersonal skills and ability to establish rapport with diverse families, staff, community stakeholders and partners; three plus years in experience in successful development and implementation of museum programs, sponsorships, and strategic planning; must understand multicultural programming to meet the needs of a diverse audience; a track record of performance excellence in meeting targets and objectives; demonstrated success in leadership roles developing innovative programs and/or “big” ideas at an institution serving children and families; experience forming successful collaborations with community groups to create a variety of learning opportunities for children and families; understanding of customer service best practices and standards includes knowledge or willingness to learn about and use visitor evaluation tools; strong analytical thinking skills; proven project management experience; ability to manage multiple, complex priorities within demanding timeframes; strong written communications to prepare reports, presentations and proposals; exceptional communication skills (public speaking and presentation); executive level budget management skills and revenue forecasting
Job Responsibilities: Other responsibilities include but not limited to: Advocates for the Museum’s educational philosophy and incorporates it into all museum experiences and educational programming; provides guidance, mentoring and development of staff to assure the operational effectiveness and impact of all programs and activities related to the visitor experience; development and evaluation of all programs to generate innovative educational programming and museum experiences; create and expand innovative informal and formal learning initiatives for children of all socio-economic levels; oversees the Museum Experience and Education staff, to assure the highest quality standards in implementing museum experiences and programming; oversees job-specific training for Museum Experience and Education staff to ensure that staff maintain excellent visitor service standards and adhere to Museum policies and use Museum spaces to bring exhibits and programs together for the benefit of the visitor; creates multi-generational experiences and programs; ensures Museum Experiences and Programming complies with best practice standards to assure continued accreditation of the Museum; recruits, trains and retains highly skilled and well qualified, diverse staff whom possess a strong museum education and/or education background and exemplify the museum’s belief in family learning and learning through play; supervises staff positively, performing timely performance assessments and provide professional development; creates a budget and meets annual financial targets; plans, implements and monitors financial resources throughout operational areas of responsibility.
Identifies and develops projects for grant funding related to programs and works with the Development team to help secure funding; develops and sustains a network of external professionals and stakeholder relationships; and acts as a spokesperson for Museum
