Wishing Well, smart sculpture (2016)
Medium: monitor, computer, microphone, speaker, crank, wood, acrylic, natural garden, website
Dimensions: 10’ x 10’ x 8’
An updated technological interpretation of a fairy tale wishing well. Speak a wish into the well and the words will be translated into a video ripple inside. Turn the crank to activate the microphone recording and to rotate the video live feed. The audio recordings are collected into a database within the sculpture, then are instantly uploaded to a website to extend the artwork beyond the physical space of the site. The website can be easily curated. Visit the last website www.wishingwellnyc.org to listen to the wishes. The original Wishing Well was open to receive anonymous wishes until October 3, 2017. Thousands of audio recordings were made over the 2016-2017 year.
This exhibition was originally presented by the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum and the Historic House Trust, with generous funding from the Historic House Trust’s Contemporary Art Partnerships program and the New York State Council on the Arts. It is a part of the Arts in the Park program NYC.
The Wishing Well can be built for any site with a new base to fit into the landscape/garden. The website can be tailor-made for each museum.
