Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; minimum 3+ years in a management role in a museum or other educational institution; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Job Responsibilities
Directs the planning, development, and implementation process for all operational and educational activities, including public events, classes, special programs, birthday parties, and summer camps at Discovery Place KIDS-Huntersville. a. Works with community groups, organizations, and others to increase awareness of the institution as a resource, and develops collaborations and partnerships to extend organizational programs and audiences b. Oversees the development and operations of classes, workshops, programs, birthday parties and summer camps c. Ensures programming content and complexity is adapted to the ages and interests of the audience d. Understands current state standards for school program/class development e. Manages the development of activities for special events f. Oversees the production of materials to ensure compatibility with institution's programming mission g. Aids in the development of programmatic evaluation Manages museum staff a. Responsible for directing the recruitment and acquisition of Discovery Place KIDS-Huntersville employees b. Ensures that staff members are adequately trained and knowledgeable of the museum’s programs, operations, policies, and procedures c. Schedules according to appropriate staffing level needs and provides assignments for staff d. Ensures that the highest levels of customer service, both internal and external, is upheld by all museum staff members e. Plans or suggests opportunities for employee retention Develops and manages Discovery Place KIDS-Huntersville budgets a. Responsible for developing cost-effective budgets for the museum b. Reviews analyses of activities, costs, operations, and forecast data to determine museum progress toward stated goals and objectives c. Confers with administrative personnel to review achievements and discuss required changes in goals or objectives resulting from current status and conditions. Oversees cash handling operations for front desk and retail operations a) Perform cash handling supervisory duties as outlined in company procedures b) Accurately perform admissions reporting and report discrepancies to the Accounting office c) Train front desk operators d) Assist front desk operators by working at the front desk as needed Collaborates with the Marketing, Development, Exhibits, and Information Systems teams a. Provides information to the Marketing department including general descriptions, blogs, and other content pertaining to programming, signage, camps, workshops, classes, and special events as needed b. Communicates information system needs and assessments to the Information Systems department c. Engages new and existing donors either directly or by assisting the Development department representatives d. Aids in the planning process of annual fundraising events e. Communicates exhibit and operational graphic needs, assessments, and development opportunities to the Exhibits department and coordinates on-site exhibit operations Monitors the museum exhibits, activities, and environment to ensure safety a) Perform exhibit checks and either correct problems or report them to the appropriate personnel b) Enforce safety and other policies/procedures within the museum c) Assist in emergency response procedures d) Maintain a clean and orderly work environment Demonstrates behavior consistent with the organizational culture a) Continually maintain an outwardly positive demeanor toward coworkers and visitors b) Maintain a team-oriented approach and can-do attitude c) Assist other team members and departments in their responsibilities when help is needed d) Display flexibility in an ever-changing environment e) Assist in training and share business-related knowledge with fellow employees
