Under the general supervision of the Director of Exhibits and Facilities, the Exhibition Craftsperson is responsible for designing, prototyping and fabricating the interactive exhibits that are essential for our museum to serve the community as a center for learning and discovery. The Exhibition Craftsperson directly accomplishes our core purpose of creating great and unique spaces in which to work, play, and learn.

Any combination of education and experience providing the skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Minimum employment standards are: • AA degree; • Proven ability to work in a collaborative team and have excellent communications skills; • Five years experience in a professional production workshop which includes wood, metal, mechanical, electrical, and machining operations; experience in a museum setting desirable; • Creative and inventive abilities; good problem solver; • Knowledgeable about materials, mechanics, AV multimedia, and electrical as applied to exhibits; • High end fabrication skills including metal working, woodworking, and plastics tools and techniques; • Basic drawing/sketching skills; and • Self-paced with the ability to work as a team in a dynamic environment with low supervision.
Works within strategic framework and established goals, objectives and schedules. Focus is on exhibit project/program development, delivery and execution. Applies exhibit design and technical knowledge to achieve results. Problem analysis and creative solutions impact museum resources. Expectations and experience required described below: • Work in a collaborative team in the development, design, prototyping and production of specific interactive exhibits; • Contribute productive and positive technical expertise, leadership and teamwork; • Integrate the value and quality of the museum visitor experience into exhibit design and production; • Develop engineering specifications and construction details for specific exhibits; • Work in collaboration with exhibit designers to produce engineering CAD detail drawings both in preparation for new projects; and support the documentation of existing exhibit engineering • Use best practices of fabrication and design refinement • Integrate exhibit operation and maintenance specifications into final exhibit iterations; • Fabricate exhibit prototypes and final exhibit iterations; • Develop and maintain CDM exhibit fabrication quality standards; • Support and help manage the set-up and break-down of traveling exhibitions; • Perform Exhibit King responsibilities as required; • Contribute to general exhibit design and production operations and exhibit operation and maintenance, including shop cleaning, storage organization, and other departmental duties as required. • Participate in project management and production management of fabrication shop
